SISU (2023) - Movie Review

๐ŸŽฅ SISU (2023)

A FILM BY JALMARI HELANDER

Overview -

The title is as plain as the film itself. Sisu – which is a Finnish word means tenacity, especially in the face of despair – promises a bare-bones thriller based on outrageous action and delivers in the fullest of the brutal way of making.

Jalmari Helander’s Finnish based English-language movie is set during World War II, a time of nasty Nazis, a battle-ravaged land, and at least one money-minded Finn. Aatami (Jorma Tommila) has found a stash of gold that he is determined to protect his bounty at any costs. So what if a Nazi battalion is on his trail? The film which depicted the aftereffect and other related incidents backed up the survival of Aatami and the other Finn refugees.

Aatami – part Boris the Blade and part John Wick – soldiers on. Sisu has the good sense to move swiftly from one mayhem-filled moment to the next. The film efficiently rolls out its suspense and surprises, with the impact of squelching guts and exploding entrails enhanced by minimal dialogue. Instead, we are invited to marvel at the ways in which Aatami lives up to his reputation of being immortal. In a scene the female lead tells that He isn't immortal person, rather he just refuse to die. The single piece of dialogue contains the characterization of the protagonist.

At least some verbiage is dedicated to Aatami’s back story – a bad idea. We neither want to nor need to know anything about this killing machine. Jorma Tommila’s lack of personality ensures zero interest in Aatami and every bit of attention on his innovative modes of dispatch. Aksel Hennie, as the brutal Bruno who is as pig-headed as Aatami, is at least more fun.

Positives -

Sisu is not only an ode to classic modern action films like Mad Max: Fury Road and John Wick, but it’s able to separate itself as something else entirely thanks to its grit and dedication to its setting. The movie from Finnish director Jalmari Helander is a wild, awe-inducing journey of literal blood, sweat, and tears that will leave any action fan clamoring for more. The film might gets a separate fan-base among the action lovers because it's unique style of making and storytelling. Even the characters portraits in the film itself has the uniqueness in their own way of performance. Also the catching and stunning cinematography is elevated the film to next level of theatrical experience. Each and every frames are exceptionally drawing like a picture. Technical department is done a great job, because of the production quality is one of the major attractive factor.
Looking into the performance of the artists, everyone was done an outstanding performances even the female characters. Some scenes has adrenaline rush and given guaranteed goosebumps.
The film has a runtime of 93 minutes only, the director is more conscious about to trim the duration and carried out the story-line in a specific period of time.

Negatives -

Sisu isn’t afraid of being outrageous with its action. The kills feel sudden, bloody, and almost comically gory, rather than choreographed dozens of violence sequences. It’s gritty and hard-edged; if you don’t want to see a horse’s exploded rib cage, this movie isn’t for you. These are not supposed to the drawback of the film but also it's the execution and way of making of this film. So if you are a light hearted person, please move on to another movie of your taste.

Opinion -

Sisu is an excellent piece of craft which excellently executed uniquely and it offers some elements which you never seen before. That's the quality of this Finnish film. The whole cast and crew are undoubtedly induced the extrinsic extravaganza of cinematic experience. So if you are a hard-core addict of brutal blood sheds and mind disturbing slashers, this is definitely your pick of work. Go and have some bloody fun.
